LOCATION: Sweden

 

TECHNICAL CHALLENGES:

Leaks detected after a short running time. The leaks are a result of pressure surges and movements in the pipe lines. The media that leaks is caustic Black liquor. The challenge is to find a solution that provides a seal without modifying the pipe system or flange configuration. Gasket used before the new solution. It was identified that even though the flanges, that are loose collar flanges, were torqued with the correct torque the flanges moved so much that the gasket leaked shortly after installation. The torque value used also resulted in flange rotation.

 

SOLUTION:

Flexitallic designed a special spiral wound gasket with winding element of Low Stress style. Flexitallic recommended a reduced torque value to avoid the flange rotation that was identified. The gasket was designed to seal as far out on the flange as possible and to have a very low seating stress. By doing this the flange connection could be kept as stiff as possible to reduce the movement between the flanges during pipe movement or pressure transitions.

TECHNICAL CHALLENGES:

Leaks detected in the Green Liquor system. The green Liquor is a caustic liquor with oxidizing properties. This means that any organic gasket used will provide some kind of problem. Some flanges in the system are loose collar flanges and most of them leaked more than the standard flanges. The challenge was to find a suitable solution for the system and also to test a gasket that can be used throughout the whole plant as a standard gasket. Flange rotation in the loose collar flanges were also an issue.

 

SOLUTION:

Flexitallic designed a Sigma® 500 faced ZA Flexpro™ for the loose collar flanges to keep a good seal and a stiff connection. A new lower bolt torque value was also used. On all the other flanges Thermiculite® 815 was used. New bolt torque recommendations were given. The solutions worked very well.

TECHNICAL CHALLENGES:

Make a seal on a Black liquor / Steam heat exchanger. Leaks were detected due to pressure transitions in the black liquor part of the heat exchanger. The bolts was torqued with recommended torque values from the gasket supplier.

 

SOLUTION:

Flexitallic designed a Special Spiral Wound CGI Gasket with bolt holes in the outer ring and two pass bars. The bolt holes were designed in the gasket to make sure the gasket installation is perfect. The flanges on the exchanger are flat faced. The winging on the gasket was made to fully compress with the available bolt stress. New bolt torque figures were provided with the gasket. The solutions worked very well.
